Antigone, Final Exam Essay, Final Exam Schedule

During these two weeks, we finished writing the final exam essay and reading the Greek drama Antigone by Sophocles. You took the unit test on Antigone last Thursday, Dec. 12.  You also accomplished all guides - Antigone and the Final Exam Guide.

This week is the final exam week. We have one more day to review and that is today, Monday, Dec. 16. Let's make use of it to clarify lessons that are still confusing to you.

Persuasive Essay, STAAR

Week #14 November 25-26, 2013

Last week, we reviewed the Fall Benchmark test.  We reviewed the following: persuasive essay and rubric, OER rubric, and question stems.  We also reviewed sentence structure and wrote sentences using vocabulary words. 

This week was a short week. We continued to review STAAR question stems and sentence structure. When you get back from the Thanksgiving holiday, we will continue to our next selection.

Greek Drama, WITS, STAAR

Last week, we finished the STAAR Fall District Assessment, but we did not get to read anything that has to do with Greek drama.  We will try to shoot for some readings towards the end of this week.  That week, we also had vocabulary quiz #5 in the academic class and quiz #10 in the CP class. 

This week, we will begin with WITS writing on Monday.  First period will have the WITS writer and will write poetry with her. The other classes will have quiz #6 first, and then the WITS lesson next where they will also write poetry.  First period will have their quiz on Tuesday. The CP class will take quiz #11. 

The next few days will be spent studying the Fall District Assessment accomplished last week and looking at sample essays and OER responses. 

By Thursday or Friday, we hope to read about Greek drama.  

Each level will receive vocabulary lists on Monday, Nov. 18.

Last week, we finally finished our unit on Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Good job on accomplishing all activities related to the novel.

Today, we started the week with quizzes: SAT quiz #5 for academic classes and SAT quiz #10 for the CP class.  After the quiz, we also had a head-start on the Fall District Assessment.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, and for the rest of the week, we will spend time on the district assessment. 

We are now on the 3rd Six Weeks, so let us make the most of it.  Please do not sit on any low grades, for this cycle will go really fast. Before you know it, it is the final exam.

During week #10, we finished reading the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Ye-hey!  I know a lot of you were saddened by the ending, but don't despair. Soon, we will embark on another adventure, but not too soon.  During this week, we also started a persuasive essay which we will finish during week #11.

We will begin Week #11 with the Of Mice and Men unit test on Monday, Nov. 4.  For the next one to two days, you will finish the persuasive essay you already started last week.  After submission of the essay on Wednesday, we will view the movie adaptation of Of Mice and Men and a short film on John Steinbeck. 

Let's stick to our schedule, so we can continue to indulge ourselves in Greek drama in Week #12.

Last week, we read and annotated and discussed Of Mice and Men in class.  CP students wrote sentences with appositives while the academic students wrote sentences with participial phrases.  Everyone had a quiz on Monday, 10/21.  Oh, and we had Homecoming and won the game last Friday, Oct. 25! :)

We started this week with a vocabulary quiz as well.  We will continue to read and annotate the novel OMM until we finish it at the end of this week.  Prepare for a UNIT test on Monday next week, Nov. 4.

Last week was a busy week. The students took a vocabulary quiz on Monday and continued to read chapter 1 of OMM.  They used their focus questions and character and setting analysis chart to understand the plot, characters, and motivations in the novel.  On the 16th, they took their PSAT. Back in the classroom, they continued to read and made headway in chapter 2. There was an early dismissal last Friday, Oct. 18.

We will start the week of Oct. 21 with a vocabulary quiz.  We will continue to read and annotate OMM

Last week, we read and wrote poetry. Twice! You wrote a poem with me after reading Exra Pounds' poem and used specific diction, imagery, tone and mood.  You also submitted your poem to Edmodo. Congratulations! And then, you read two poems with our WITS writer, after which you also wrote a poem, still with specific language, but you added metaphors using a comparison between and abstraction and a concrete noun. Great job!

We started the week yesterday reading about John Steinbeck, the Great Depression, and the Migrant Experience.  We finished these articles today.  Tomorrow, Oct. 9, I will give you an open notes quiz on these articles. Don't forget your notes! This is for both academic and CP.

The CP students read an additional article about "The Flood," an excerpt from the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. You have the questions based on this article. Please bring it tomorrow, Oct. 9, already done. You will also take Quiz #6 for SAT list #6. (Additional assignment: "The Possibility of Evil" questions)

For the rest of the week, we will work on the following assignments:

Last week, we finished reading "There Will Come Soft Rains" and "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury.  We also finished viewing and discussing the Ray Bradbury biographical video.  we were able to review the first fifteen poetry terms and looked at some examples.  All these assignments were accomplished in both academic and CP classes, but the CP students did not get to reading "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson; they will read it this week.

This week, we will concentrate on poetry and discuss how writing poetry can be a jumping board towards writing effectively using sound diction. We will have WITS lessons on Wednesday and Thursday.

Last week, we finished reading and discussing " A Sound of Thunder (ASOT)," a short story by Ray Bradbury.  We also started and finished reading "There Will Come Soft Rains (TWCSR)," also by the same author (except in one class).  In CP, we also finished reading and discussing "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. You took the summer reading unit test last Monday, Sept. 16 and took a vocabulary quiz in CP on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

This week, we are going to finish discussion on TWCSR and watch a film about Ray Bradbury in both levels.  We will also work on writing using a poem as a model. The CP students will have two additional readings: "The Possibility of Evil" and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.

"A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury,"Everyday Use" by Alice Wakler, and other stories

Week 3 Sept. 9-12, 2013

For week 3, we finished the Beginning of Year test (BOY), had the yearbook photos taken, and took a quiz in both levels (Thursday). 

I collected vocabulary notebooks on Thursday and the "Harrison Bergeron" study guide at all levels.  I also collected the expository outline Monday, 9/9/13.

College prep students received the week 3 vocabulary list and sentence assignments from me on Monday, 9/9/13.  Please prepare for sentence homework collection during week 4.

Academic and College Prep students should prepare for the summer reading tests: You Don't Know Me by David Klass (academic), and East of Eden by John Steinbeck (CP). 


Week 4 Sept. 16-20, 2013

For week 4, the week will begin with the administration of the summer reading tests on Monday. 

I will collect the sentence assignments from the CO students on Monday, 9/16/13.

Academic students will receive a poetry terms list this week.

In both levels, we will finish reading " A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury.  We will annotate and respond to guide questions.

CP students will receive an assignment for "Everyday Use" by Alice walker, and will read two additional short stories at home.  I will announce the titles in class.  

By Friday, students will receive their Edmodo codes and will be expected to sign up for Edmodo and enroll in their respective groups/classes.

"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut/ Expository V.S. Persuasive

This week, the CP students took a vocabulary quiz for SAT list 1 on Tuesday, Sept.3, while the academic students took a literary quiz on Friday, Sept. 6. 

The CP students finished reading HB last Friday, Aug. 29, so this week the students worked on the study guide, wrote sentences with participial phrases.  The academic students finished reading HB on Tuesday and worked on the study guide that day as well. Some took the guide home as homework.

On Wednesday and Thursday, both the academic and CP students read expository and persuasive articles and compared and contrasted the two genres of writing. After reading, the students then wrote an outline for an introduction to an expository essay.  The teacher facilitated the class in coming up with their own sample intro outline as a class.  All students will write their own outline; unfinished outline were taken home for homework. 

On Friday, the CP students discussed participles and discussed a participles activity they took home for homework the previous day. 

On Monday, Sept. 9, all students will take the Beginning of Year Assessment (BOY).

Monday - Friday

  • On Monday, you will take Quiz #3 covering vocabulary N#s 21-30 and questions on chapters we already covered.
  • We will continue to read the memoir and understand the events and the significance of these on Wiesel's life.
  • Understand and analyze the characters and their motivation.
  • Understand and analyze the historical context of the events that affected or influenced Wiesel's life.
  • Prepare for periodic reading checks.

  • Receive spring semester syllabus and discuss expectations for the entire semester.
  • Define and understand vocabulary words. Identify root words and affixes.
Thursday-Friday
  • Read "Frequently Asked Questions about the Holocaust.
  • Read the historical context of Night by Elie Wiesel and fill in the blanks in the historical context handout.
  • Take an open notes reading test.
