Literature: "Two Friends" by Guy de Maupassant
Grammar: Revising and Editing, Parts of Speech, Parts of a Sentence, Sentence, Phrases, Fragment, Capitalization, and Punctuation
Vocabulary: See textbook for "Two Friends": afford, atrocity, dejected, eccentric, fanatical, pensive, rejuvenated, unperturbed

Homework:
- Vocabulary SAT notes - due Thursday
- Crossword puzzle - due Friday, March 4

Activities
Monday
1. Review essay writing and scoring.
2. Go over revising and editing.

Tuesday
Take the TAKS test and in the afternoon, watch a film ("The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"), and then review for a test on Night.

Wednesday
Continue film viewing. Analyze parallels between film and Night.
Analyze parts of speech in an excerpt of Night.

Thursday
Read the short story "Two Friends" and discuss. Write sentences in a summary of the short story using the vocabulary words and include prepositional phrases.

Friday
Go over the assignment done on Thursday. Take a reading check on the short story.

Lessons: Triplets, Revising and Editing, and Writing

Homework:
- Vocab SAT notes - due every Thursday - This week's vocab activity will be a crossword puzzle.
- Night test and film viweing will be indefinitely postponed until after all TAKS preparations are done.

Activities
Monday
1. Take the benchmark test and go over the answers. Identify examples of literary terms in the selection.
2. Write an outline for an essay using the hexagonal pre-writing format. Write the essay.

Tuesday
1. Finish writing the essay and rate accordingly.
2. Work on revising and editing.

Wednesday
1. Work on a revising and editing activity. Go over the answers.
2. Work on another TAKS triplet. Work on the OER questions.

Thursday - Friday
1. Rate OER questions.
2. POssible film viewing if ALL activities are finished.

Week #24 Feb 14-18, 2011

Literature: Literary and expository passage/ Night by Elie Wiesel
Grammar: parts of speech, parts of a sentence, punctuation, verbal, writing
Vocabulary: literary terms - See Glossary of Terms

Homework:
- No vocabulary assignment this week - bring vocabulary notebook daily

Activities
Monday
1. Night Test - postponed indefintely.
2. Go over the answers if time allows.
3. Work on a grammar assignment using a Night passage.

Tuesday - Thursday
1. Continue working on a grammar packet using a Night passage and discuss in class.
2. Possibility of film viewing: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (Buena Vista Entertainment) may follow. After the film viewing, students will review the writing process and will write an essay of six paragraphs comparing and contrasting the novel Night and the film.

Friday
1. Work on a TAKS released test. Go over question stems and begin the test practice.
2. Discuss mulitple choice answers.

- setting and theme

Discuss irony and cite examples.
Group work: characterization activity - due at the end of the period.

English II Course Outline

Dear Students/Parents/Guardian,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the school year 2012-2013 at Bellaire High School. This letter includes the set of class rules. It is vital that the student and the parents co-exist with the teacher in monitoring the activities a student has to work on and the rules that apply when a rule is broken especially if it disrupts the smooth flow of scheduled activities. I look forward to having a harmonious teamwork with all of you throughout the school year.

CLASSROOM RULES

1. Be polite and use good manners.

2. Follow directions and complete work.

3. Raise hand before speaking or leaving seat/work station.

4. Bring materials to school and be ready to work.

5. Respect your own and other’s property.

Specific rules:

1. Be in class on time.

2. Keep your hands and your feet to yourself at all times.

3. Do not use vulgar or offensive language.

4. NO gum chewing in class.

5. Always take turns when speaking or when using a book or any material in class.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO BREAK A RULE:

First Offense: Verbal warning

Second Offense: Written warning

Third Offense: Parental Contact

Fourth Offense: Administrative Referral

Fifth Offense: Detention/Removal from class

*Late submission of work may not be accepted for daily grades. Deductions will be incurred for accepted late work: 15 points/percent on the first day, 25 points/percent on the 2^nd day, 35 points/percent on the 3^rd day, 50 points/percent on the 4^th day, and zero on the 5^th day. Any work not turned in after five days may not be accepted for a grade anymore.

*The student is responsible to ask the teacher for missed work after every absence occurs.

*The student can be allowed make-up work for every excused absence and may earn 100% replacing a low grade within 3-5 days, or as per student-teacher agreement from the day the student comes back from an absence. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work.

ENGLISH II Syllabus

Course Description:

English II is a course that covers the elements of fiction and non-fiction, the parts of speech, and selected texts. The lessons will encompass a study of literary structure, literary devices, and interpretation of meaning through reading, learning through teamwork, analysis through writing, significance of culture and diversity, a time in American history, a Shakespearean play, and research writing.

Course Goals/Objectives:

Reading – Students will read, respond to, analyze, and evaluate a variety of texts in order to increase vocabulary, increase knowledge of their own and others’ cultures, and research topics

Writing – Students will use the recursive writing process to write effectively in a variety of forms and will evaluate their own and others’ writings.

Speaking and Listening – Students will present informative, persuasive, and literary messages appropriate to the purpose and audience, and will listen attentively to and analyze and evaluate others’ presentations.

Viewing and Representing – Students will interpret, analyze, evaluate and produce visual representations.

Grading:

A = 90- 100

B = 80- 89

C = 75- 79

D = 70- 74

F = 69- below
